The purpose of education is to teach children the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can become productive and responsible members of society. Currently, education systems across Africa are struggling to perform this duty with limited infrastructure and support.

We believe that the future of Africa lies in the hands of the young, and that if young Africans are helped with the dilemmas they face - such as harsh poverty and lack of infrastructure - they will in turn help Africa in the future.

School Supplies

Students in Togo are required to provide their own school uniforms and books, which can be a daunting expense for poor families. For three years, we have donated school supplies and uniforms to more than 500 children in our communities.

School Bench-Seats

One of our first projects was to donate “table-bancs” or bench seats to local schools. Local schools in small towns must build and furnish schools on their own. Many schools do not have adequate seating, as seats are expensive and are often the last addition to the school. We are continuing this project in 2007 by donating bench seats to three different rural schools. Inadequate seating in classrooms makes it very difficult for students to learn. Our donations encourage students to stay in school and also show them the value of community involvement.

School Roofs

Alaffia has also donated and installed new metal roofs on two school buildings for the Agborode public school in Agborode, Togo. These rural schools were built by community members, and had traditional straw roofs. While straw roofs are adequate, they must be replaced every two or three years. The donated roof should last 15 years, and the school rooms are brighter. This project and the bench seat project also provide jobs for local carpenters.
